Of the eight million pets that enter animal shelters and rescue groups every year, approximately three million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized due to a lack of adoption. The continued euthanasia of our best friends and family members is a national tragedy.
Presently, most people do not obtain their pets from shelters, but rather from pet stores, the Internet, friends, breeders or other sources. In an effort to change this trend, The Shelter Pet Project is designed to encourage pet lovers throughout the country to make shelters and rescue groups the first place they turn to when acquiring companion animals. Contrary to popular beliefs, animals most frequently find themselves in shelters due to owner-related issues.
At www.theshelterpetproject.org you will find information about how to adopt from a shelter, as well as help for potential pet owners to identify traits to look for in an animal, as well as a list of suitable pets available in local shelters.

Meet Levi, a knee-high blue-nose UKC American Pit Bull Terrier/American Staffordshire Terrier almost 8 months old! Levi was surrendered to the local shelter because his original owners couldn't afford to care for him. He was rescued by his foster home when he ran out of time at the shelter and is now hoping for another chance to find just the right family. To learn more about Levi click here.
SOS is an all volunteer
group that assists in advertising the
animals available for adoption at
Kalamazoo County Animal Services &
Enforcement.
SOS volunteers visit Animal Service's kennel once a week to photograph the adoptable animals housed there. Those dynamic photos, of some very needy cats and dogs, are then uploaded to the international adoption website Petfinder in hopes of increasing their chances for adoption.
Even though photography is our primary role SOS also prides itself on assisting whenever there is a need. SOS organizes adoptions events at local pet stores and is responsible for the transportation and handling of the animals at those and other events throughout Kalamazoo County.
